Anxiety has been designed to keep us safe – when we perceive a threat, it triggers the flight or fight response, so that we can protect ourselves. At these times, the more primitive, emotional brain is activated, and the higher centres which are to do with rational decision-making cannot function.

Post-traumatic stress disorder occurs when a person has been exposed to an extreme threat and persistently re-experiences it in various ways.
